Denis Villeneuve’s James Bond film is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated projects, and that's hardly surprising, considering the goodwill the filmmaker has amassed over the years with his robust body of work. The Canadian filmmaker began his career with multi-language films that explored stories from all walks of life. His 2010 mystery thriller Incendies also earned an Oscar nomination in the Best Foreign Language Film category. Fifteen years later, he is in charge of leading the 007 agent's story in a new direction.

It's the first Bond film since Cary Joji Fukunaga's No Time to Die (2021), which showed the iconic spy dying at the hands of the forces that conspired against him. Some thought it was a befitting adieu to Daniel Craig's iconic legacy, who revitalized this role with a new spirit, while others didn't like the idea of the agent dying to make sense of his legacy. No matter what, Craig's reputation is one for the ages because he portrayed the spy with a suave charm much like his predecessors. So, whoever replaces him clearly has big shoes to fill.

Since the first cinematic adaptation of Ian Fleming's novels, the character has been played by a number of iconic actors, who found an intricate balance in portraying the character's deadly combat skills with the required intelligence and pizzazz. We're yet to receive a definitive update on the casting, but a few rumors are floating around about the possible star who might take on this role and the nature of Denis Villeneuve's stint as a James Bond director.

Here's what we know so far about Denis Villeneuve's James Bond film

Denis Villeneuve has a massive responsibility on his shoulders as the next director of a James Bond project. However, that may not be too difficult for him, considering his experience working on massive-scale projects like Blade Runner 2049 (2017) and the Dune film series. Although very little has been officially revealed about the project so far, Matt Belloni's Puck News shares a few insights about what might be the nature of Villeneuve's work with Amazon MGM for the James Bond film.

While the update of Denis Villeneuve's onboarding as a director is delightful to his fans, it might be a little too early to celebrate. According to Puck, the director might not have a say in how the final cut would be. That means there will be a studio oversight over the project, which was reportedly the reason director Christopher Nolan previously didn't want to work on a Bond film. Whether Villeneuve or Nolan, these filmmakers shine the most when they are allowed to bring their vision to life without creative oversight.

Puck states that Denis Villeneuve might be brought in to direct only one film, and he can work on future Bond projects if the first film is a success. The rest of the updates come from Variety, which states that Jacob Elordi (Elvis), Tom Holland (Spider-Man), and Harris Dickinson (Triangle of Sadness) are being considered for the role. Denis Villeneuve reportedly beat out directors like Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead), Paul King (Paddington), Edward Berger (Conclave), Alfonso Cuarón (Roma), and Jonathan Nolan (Westworld) to be chosen as the director of the 26th franchise installment.

Denis Villeneuve’s James Bond film is expected to come out in 2028. However, it hasn't been finalized yet.
