The latest The Fantastic Four: First Steps trailer revealed something interesting in its concluding minutes. Ben Grimm/The Thing has a beard, and no, not in his human form, but in his rock form. We can notice the rock beard as Johnny Storm is carrying Ben towards an unknown confrontation. Johnny is flying and simultaneously carrying Ben, who has a noticeable rock beard.

While some might balk at the idea of The Thing having a beard, especially in his rock Avatar, there is a basis for this in the comics. The Thing with a beard was seen for the first time in Fantastic Four #605, which was published in 2012. Furthermore, this comic hints that The Thing can survive for an unusually long time, and thus, he has a beard.

The Thing is played by Ebon Moss-Bachrach in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. He will be the fourth actor playing The Thing in a Fantastic Four movie. While the 1994, 2005, and 2007 movies were released before Fantastic Four #605, and thus did not feature The Thing with a beard, the 2015 movie, like several other details from the comics, chose to ignore it. This is why the upcoming MCU movie has a lot of fans excited.

Will The Fantastic Four: First Steps hint at The Thing's unusually long life?

As stated before, this particular moment from The Fantastic Four: First Steps trailer takes inspiration from 2012's Fantastic Four #605. In that comic, Reed and Franklin Richards manage to invent a time-traveling device that allows them to travel to the future. The father and son travel thousands of years into the future, where it is revealed that Reed, Johnny, and Sue have passed away; however, Ben is still alive.

In this comic, Franklin gives Ben a serum that turns him human for only one day of the year. It is also revealed that Ben ages only one day of every year, and thus, doesn't shave his facial hair. Slowly, enough hair accumulated on his face, which ultimately changed his rock appearance as well. However, it remains to be seen if The Fantastic Four: First Steps will use this reasoning.

The most likely scenario here is that the movie, like several other MCU films, might be just taking one specific panel from the comics. While The Fantastic Four: First Steps might not unfold over thousands of years, it is possible that the movie does feature some type of time travel where the team needs the help of a bearded, futuristic Ben Grimm/The Thing.

What will the First Steps be about?

Set on a different Earth, the movie follows the Fantastic Four as they try to save their world from the existential threat of Galactus, who is known for devouring worlds to satisfy his hunger.

"Set against the vibrant backdrop of a 1960s-inspired, retro-futuristic world, Marvel Studios’ 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps' introduces Marvel’s First Family—Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic, Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, Johnny Storm/Human Torch and Ben Grimm/The Thing as they face their most daunting challenge yet."
