Lanterns, the HBO DCU series, has added another celebrated talent to its cast list. Actress Laura Linney. It is imperative to note that her casting hasn't been officially confirmed by DC Studios or WBD. But the person who revealed this casting choice, Jeff Sneider, has a reputation for getting a lot of scoops related to the entertainment industry right.
Furthermore, her rumored role is believed to be that of Carol Ferris, Hal Jordan's love interest, and sometimes even the supervillain Star Sapphire. If you don't know, the Star Sapphire Corps are powered by love. If Linney does end up playing Carol Ferris in the HBO show, then it would be the second time that the character is being adapted for the live-action format, the first time being Blake Lively.
Who is Carol Ferris, and what role does she play in the Lanterns lore?
As stated before, Carol Ferris initially started as Hal Jordan, the legendary human Green Lantern's girlfriend. But her character is known for taking a darker turn in the 1960s as she was chosen as one of the Star Sapphire Lanterns, one of the Green Lantern Corps' rivals. Thus, she became one of Hal Jordan's challenging foes because of their emotional connection.
But over time, Carol was able to overcome her Lantern ring's control and became Hal's ally, too. Some believe that by dropping the word "green" and simply titling the HBO series "Lanterns," the DCU seems to hint at the involvement of other Lantern Corps, too, including the Star Sapphire Corps. Thus, it would mean including one of the most well-known Star Sapphire Corps members, Carol Ferris.
Where did this rumor originate from?
Jeff Sneider is the man who revealed Laura Linney's casting in the HBO DCU superhero show. He appeared on John Rocha's The Hot Mic podcast on May 30, 2025, and said this:
“There’s been an addition to Lanterns. She is a three-time Oscar nominee and a four-time Emmy winner. I don’t know what the role is, but you can welcome to the DC Universe, Miss Laura Linney. Laura Linney has joined Lanterns I am told.”
However, Sneider said that he was unaware of Linney's role in the HBO series:
“Maybe she’ll be part of Lantern…Green Lantern Corp. Could you see her being the person who sends them to Earth? I don’t know.”
Hearing these words, Rocha interjected:
“Could she be playing Carol Ferris? Could she be playing Hal Jordan’s significant other?”
Then, he further went on to add that Linney and Kyle Chandler's on-screen chemistry has the potential to light up the small screen.
What is HBO's Lanterns about?
We know that the HBO show is set to be grittier than the first live-action attempt at bringing the Green Lantern Corps to the big screen, i.e., the 2011 movie. While announcing the series, James Gunn described the series as a True Detective-style mystery. The official logline for the show reads:
"The series follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland."
